His Emperor Highness Mykola I signed the Highest Rescript about opening the medical faculty at St.Volodymyr University (29.04 in the old style) in 1840.
In 1841 Council of St. Volodymyr University approved the decision about opening the first medical faculty in September 1841. First admission – 29 students. On 23 (9), September, professor M.I.Kozlov read the first lecture on anatomy, and on 26 (12), September, professor V.O. Karavayev – first lecture on the encyclopedia and methodology of medicine.

V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National University

FOUNDATION
V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National University is one of the oldest universities in Eastern Europe. It was founded in 1804, on the initiative of the prominent educator V.N. Karazin and in accordance with the charter of Tsar Alexander I. The University is the only institution in Ukraine that has trained and employed three Nobel Prize laureates: the biologist I. Mechnikov, the economist S. Kuznets, and the physicist L. Landau. At different times titles of Kharkiv University Honorary Members and Doctors were conferred on outstanding scholars and public figures of many countries, including J.W. Goethe and A. Humboldt, I. Franko and L. Tolstoy, P. Semenov-Tyanshanskiy, and others. The title of Honorary Doctor of Kharkiv University was conferred on the first President of Ukraine Mykhailo Hrushevskyi. Kharkiv University is associated with the first Ukrainian newspapers and journals and the first scientific societies. In 2003, following the decree of the President of Ukraine, V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National University obtained the highest status of a self-governing (autonomous) state university.

LOCATION
The University is located in Kharkiv. The activities of the University have developed Kharkiv city into a major industrial, scientific and cultural center. Many Kharkiv streets are named after professors, researches and alumni of the University.

STUDENTS AND GRADUATES
Since its foundation, the University has graduated over 130,000 students. The names of the graduates are commemorated in geographical names, names of space objects, plants and minerals, laws and formulae. Almost 60 University graduates have become academicians and corresponding members of the Ukrainian National Academy of Sciences (UNAS). In total University amounts to about 12,000 undergraduate and graduate students and about 400 postgraduate students. The University employs up to 1,500 teaching and academic staff, including more than 200 Doctors of Sciences, Professors, and almost 800 PhDs. SCIENCE AT THE UNIVERSITY

FACILITIES AT THE UNIVERSITY
Since 1808 the University has had its own Astronomical Observatory which is one of the leading astronomical centers of Ukraine involved in fundamental and applied research in the Physics of the Sun, the planets, asteroids, comets and satellites. The University’s Botanical Garden was founded in 1804 and is the oldest botanical garden in Ukraine. It is a state preserve with a unique collection of plants representing various botanical and geographic zones of the world. The University’s Natural History Museum was founded in 1807 and is one of the oldest university museums in the world. Every year it opens its doors to 22,000 visitors. The total area of the Museum exhibition facilities is 2,000 square meters, and its 23 halls feature about 250,000 exhibits organized into the following sections: The Origin of Man, Darwinism, Zoology, and Geology. The University also has the Museum of Archaeology and Ethnography of Slobidska Ukraine with about 150,000 exhibits. The University’s Central Scientific Library was founded on January 30, 1805. In 1987, the decree of the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine established it as an institution of special social importance. It numbers 3,500,000 units, including 50,000 unique editions (17 incunabula, over 1,000 manuscripts, 300 paleo-types, and books by classical writers and scholars published in their lifetime).

FOUNDATION
Kharkiv National Medical University is one of the oldest higher educational establishments of Ukraine. It was founded in 1805 as the Medical Faculty of the Kharkiv National University.
Historically, Kharkiv National Medical University (KNMU) was the first higher medical educational institution in Ukraine.

It was founded as the Medical Faculty of Kharkiv.
In 1920, the Medical Faculty was united with the Women’s Medical Institute, and Kharkiv Medical Academy was organized.
In 1921, the Academy was renamed as Kharkiv Medical Institute.
In 1994, the Institute served as a base for establishing Kharkiv State Medical University.
In 2007 Kharkiv state Medical University was renamed as Kharkiv National Medical University.

STUDY AT THE UNIVERSITY
Kharkiv National Medical University is the best institution for foreign students who want to study Medicine in Ukraine. The Degree (MBBS, BDS, MD, MDS, MS, NURSING) of the Kharkiv National Medical University (KNMU) is prestigious and is recognized in many countries of the world. INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
Since 1951 the University has been training specialists for foreign countries of Eastern Europe, China, Mongolia and since 1961 students from the countries of Asia, Africa, and Latin America have been studying here. Now, 2700 foreign citizens study at KNMU at the Medical and Dentistry Faculties, at the clinical postgraduate course. More than 7,000 specialists from 86 states of Europe, Asia, Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East have graduated from KNMU since 1951. Among them 12 Doctors and 90 Candidates of Medical Sciences, about 200 postgraduates. The languages of instruction for foreign students are Russian and English. KNMU has become an important center for international students who need expert teaching in learning. The University is currently training about 8,000 students, among them 2700 foreign citizens. Among the University academicians, there are than 700 teachers, including 102 Doctors of Sciences and Professors, 387 Candidates of Medical Science, 32 members of academies, 17 Honored Scientists. National Pirogov Memorial Medical University was founded in the year 1805. NPMMU Vinnytsya is one of the oldest and leading medical higher institutions of Ukraine and former USSR.

LOCATION
Vinnytsia is the center of the Vinnytsia region, a city with rich traditions and history, is located on the crossroads of economic, social, geopolitical meridians of Ukraine. Physical training is included in the curriculum of all faculties. The gymnasiums grounds are given free of charge. Working with the foreign citizens, we take into account their regional, religious, national, individual and psychological needs. An active acquaintance of the foreigners with the history and culture of Ukraine, national traditions, the life-style of modern Ukrainian youths is carried out.

During national holidays and festivals, the foreign students acquaint the staff of the University, population of the city and state with their national art. They organize exhibitions and quiz games, which tells about the history, culture, traditions of their home countries. Traditional on such celebrations is tasting of the dishes of national cuisine prepared by the students. FOUNDATION
The history of Lviv medical university goes back to 1661 when Jesuit Collegium in Lviv by the privilege of Polish King Yan Kazimir acquired the status of Academy. It consisted of four departments and the title of the University was awarded.

On the 16th of November 1784 according to the privilege of the Austrian emperor Josef II, signed on 21 October 1784, Lviv University with the four faculties – Theology, Philosophy, Law, and Medicine –was revived. Since then Lviv National Medical University has started functioning. Taking into account state and international recognition of University activities, its great contribution to the development of national education and science, Lviv State Medical University was conferred the status of National Medical University on the 21st of August 2003 by the President’s decree №872/2003

FOUNDATION
Ternopil State Medical University ranks 3rd among the higher medical schools of the 4th accreditation level in Ukraine according to the rating list of the Ministry of Healthcare of Ukraine.

LOCATION
Ternopil (Ternopol in Russian) is a large cite in the Western part of Ukraine located on the bank of Siret River. The city Ternopil was founded in 1540 as a Polish military fortress and a castle. UNIVERSITY CAMPUS
The Campus of I.Ya. Horbachevsky Ternopil State Medical University is the structural unit of the medical university that includes the complex of the hostels with adjacent territories. The Campus serves as the accommodation for Ukrainian and Foreign Students as well as interns, masters, resident doctor, postgraduate students, students of the preparatory department and the postgraduate training faculty.

The Campus Administration coordinates the interaction between the university administrative-economic part, student government, Vice-Rector for National Patriotic and Educational Work, the Curator Council, group curators regarding the issues of leisure, educational, cultural, sports and recreation management in the Campus. The Campus Staff includes a director, his deputy, three inspectors.

The Campus Administration coordinates educational, national, patriotic, public cultural and sports and recreational activities within the campus. It also controls the organization of the life of residents to follow safety rules and fire safety.

Foreign students live in the hostel. Most of them come from India, Malaysia, Syria, Pakistan, Nigeria, Ghana, Poland, and other countries.

There are 508 bed places in the hostel. The hostel includes 206 rooms. Every floor has two wings each including 3 accommodation blocks, a side room, a kitchen, and a homeroom.

Most rooms of the hostel are connected to the Internet.

There is a hostel warden’s office, hostel staff office, spacious lobby, and 2 libraries.

There is a first aid unit on the ground floor of the university hostel.

There are 30 computers connected to the Internet. The student cafeteria functions in the hostel.

There is a spacious gym with modern pieces of gym equipment and laundry in the basement.

The campus administration office is situated on the ground floor of the hostel.

FOUNDATION
Ukrainian Medical Stomatological Academy is the leading state higher educational institution for training both physicians and dentists. The Academy started its activity in 1921 as the Odontology Faculty of the Kharkiv Medical Academy. In 1967 the Institute was transferred to the city of Poltava and renamed as the Poltava Medical Stomatological Institute, which in 1994 was granted the highest (IV) accreditation level and the status of the Ukrainian Medical Stomatological Academy. Its accreditation level IV was confirmed in 2004.

LOCATION
Poltava is the city of Ukraine and the administrative center of the Poltava region. It is situated on the North-East of our country, on the Pridneprovskaya lowland and lies on the banks of the river Vorskla. The first documented record about the city dated in the XII century.

Poltava is situated in the Eastern part of Europe, 301 km East to Kyiv.

In general, the city’s climate is temperate, continental with chilly winter and warm (sometimes sultry summer). The average temperature in January according to long-term observations is 6.8 degree centigrade below zero. The summer is warm and dry. The hottest month is July, as a rule. The average temperature in July is 20.9 degree centigrade above zero.

There are 12 higher educational establishments in the territory of our city.

RESEARCH AND ACADEMIC STAFF
The scientific potential of the UMSA is represented by 82 Doctors of Medical Science, 316 Candidates of Science, 75 professors, 174 assistant professors, 2 winners of the Ukrainian State Prize, 8 Honoured Science and Technology Workers of Ukraine, 6 Honoured physicians of Ukraine. There has been a number of considerable changes at the Academy in the last decades that have raised the higher educational institution on a new competitive level. It provides specialist training and implementation of the latest modern technologies of education. The great reputation of the Academy was confirmed by two Silver and one Bronze Medals received at the International Exhibition of Educational Institutions “Modern education in Ukraine- 2001, 2002, 2004”.

FOUNDATION
Zaporozhye State Medical University is an autonomous state higher educational institution of the 4th level accreditation. Its history goes back to the Higher Women Courses organized in Odessa in 1903. In 1921 the Courses were reorganized into the Chemical-Pharmaceutical Institute.
